Why Does My Car Start Shaking at Certain Speeds?

April 25, 2025

That small shake you feel while driving might not seem like a big deal at first—but it rarely stays small for long. As speed increases, what started as a faint vibration can quickly turn into a full-body rattle that affects your steering, ride comfort, and even safety.

When your car shakes at certain speeds, it’s usually your vehicle’s way of telling you something’s off—whether it’s with the wheels, tires, suspension, or drivetrain. Pinpointing the cause early can help you avoid more serious problems down the road. So, what’s really making your car shake?

Tire Imbalance

One of the most frequent causes of vibrations at highway speeds is unbalanced tires. When your tires aren’t properly balanced, small weight differences can cause them to spin unevenly, leading to noticeable shaking—usually between 50 and 70 mph.

This type of shaking often comes through the steering wheel and may get worse the faster you drive. If you’ve recently had new tires installed or hit a major pothole, it’s worth having your tire balance checked. Even a lost wheel weight can throw things off.

Balancing is a quick and affordable service that can make a big difference in ride quality and prevent premature tire wear.

Wheel Alignment or Suspension Problems

If your vehicle shakes at higher speeds and also seems to pull to one side or has uneven tire wear, the problem could lie in the wheel alignment or suspension system. Misaligned wheels cause your tires to point slightly in the wrong direction, which increases vibration and stress on steering components.

Worn suspension parts—such as bushings, tie rods, control arms, or shocks—can also amplify vibrations. These parts are designed to absorb road irregularities and keep your wheels planted, so once they start to fail, the entire ride becomes rougher.

Signs of suspension or alignment issues may include:

Uneven or rapid tire wear

Steering that feels loose or unresponsive

Clunking noises over bumps

An inspection by a trusted technician can identify worn components before they create more serious handling or safety problems.

Warped Brake Rotors

If the shaking only happens when you slow down from higher speeds, especially while braking, your rotors could be to blame. Warped rotors develop uneven surfaces due to excessive heat or wear, often caused by aggressive braking, towing, or poor-quality parts.

The vibration typically comes through the brake pedal or steering wheel, depending on whether the front or rear brakes are affected. Even if your brakes still “work,” continuing to drive on warped rotors can cause longer stopping distances and uneven pad wear.

Rotor resurfacing or replacement usually solves the problem and restores smooth braking performance.

Engine or Drivetrain Issues

Though less common than tire or brake problems, engine misfires, or drivetrain issues can cause shaking—especially if the vibration is felt during acceleration or while idling. Problems like worn spark plugs, dirty fuel injectors, or bad motor mounts can make the engine run unevenly and shake the vehicle.

In other cases, worn CV joints, driveshafts, or universal joints in the drivetrain can cause shaking under load or at specific speeds. These vibrations may feel more pronounced under acceleration and fade when you coast.

If the check engine light is on—or if you notice the shaking isn’t tied to speed alone—it’s smart to have the engine and transmission checked as part of the diagnosis.

Act Quickly

A car that shakes isn’t just unpleasant to drive—it’s a sign that something mechanical is out of balance or wearing out. If left unchecked, even small vibrations can lead to:

  • Increased tire wear
  • Damage to suspension components
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Brake system failure

Catching these problems early not only makes your ride more comfortable but also keeps your car safer and more reliable in the long run. Plus, many fixes are simple if diagnosed before they turn into larger repair jobs.
